“I think the biggest thing that helped me overcome my low self-esteem was realising that I was very negative about things and that I was very hard on myself. I have always had very high expectations of myself and I think I have a tendency to be very disappointed when I can’t meet those expectations. Things like, getting 100% every time in an exam or looking as perfect as other people, such as celebrities, would really play on my mind all of the time. I realised one day that I was missing out on living my life because I wasn’t experiencing the happiness that self-acceptance can bring. Doing the best you can at anything is all you can do at the end of the day. As for accepting myself, I realised that you only have one life to lead, and if you are not happy with who you are, then you are in for a very bumpy road ahead. No one likes themselves all of the time, but by trying really hard to like myself some of the time, that ‘some of the time’ gradually became ‘most of the time’. Believe me, if I can do it, anyone can.”
