TREATMENT SERVICES SOUTHERN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE TRUST
Specialist eating disorder services are available in each trust area. In the Southern Health and Social Care were Adapt operate there is Adult mental Health services (AMHS) and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). Within both of these services a specialist eating disorder services operates, providing the patient with specialist care. To access these services it is important that people who require the service make an initial appointment with their GP who will make the referral to this specialist service. It is extremely important that you share all information about your condition with your GP explaining all effects and subsequent behaviors/feelings etc you are experiencing so they have a clear understanding of your situation and can ascertain appropriate services. Your GP will then make the appropriate referral to the service, either for AMHS or CAMHS.
About CAMHS: Child and Adolescent Eating Disorder Service (Southern Trust) It is a multi-disciplinary team made up of Eating Disorder Practitioners/nurses, a Family Therapist and a dietician who have specialist training and experience in the treatment of Eating Disorders. This team provides services from 9am- 5pm Monday- Friday to 10-18 yrs olds living in the Southern Trust Area.

- A&E Consultants
- Generic CAMHS service professionals
The team specialises in the assessment and treatment of young people who present on referral with:
- Anorexia Nervosa
- Bulimia Nervosa
- Eating Disorders not Otherwise Specified.
They provide satellite services in a number of locations across the SHSCT are:
- Newry- Needham House
- Armagh- Community Hospital
- Dungannon- South Tyrone hospital 'D Floor'
- Portadown- Child and Family Clinic Bocombra.
What is on offer? When a young person is referred to the service they offer family and individual assessment. If after assessment they believe that the service is appropriate to meet your needs they will offer you an appointment at one of their clinics in your locality area. They will continue to liaise with your GP/ referrer throughout your treatment. Following assessment they can offer a wide range of interventions which include:
- Reviews
- Motivational work
- Individual therapy
- Family Therapy
- Individual Nutritional Assessment, Education and Reviews
- Nutritional Educational Groups (6 weeks)
- Carers Support Education Group (8 weeks)

About AMHS: Adult Eating Disorder Service (Southern Trust)
The AMHS service is based in Trasna House, Lurgan and delivers services in locations across the Southern Trust Area, providing outpatient therapy for adults with severe eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. What's on offer? On a persons first appointment they work with you to try and understand what is happening, and to identify the difficulties they are experiencing with their physical health, their emotional and psychological well- being, and in their life as a whole.
Interventions include:
- Education on the physical and psychological impact of an eating disorder
- Motviational work, which helps to get the person to the point where they are ready to let go of their eating disorder and make positive changes.
- Dietetic assessment and advice which includes help with food choices, portion sizes and menu planning.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) including CBT-E, which is a treatment approach specifically designed to treat eating disorders.
- CBT is a way of talking about and identifying the connections between how we think, how we feel and how we behave.
